Our unique specialist flexible connectors join two larger single seated buggies together to make a ‘double pushchair’ suitable for older, heavier or taller children who have outgrown standard pushchairs. With our unique buggy to buggy connectors, it is now possible for you to get out of house with both children on your own! Our unique connectors give you the option of having two single buggies or a double side-by-side pushchair….a flexible solution to your every day needs!

NEW! Special Tomato EIO x 2 + Specialist Buggy Flexi-Connectors developed by Freedom for Kids to create a double special needs pushchair that allows a sole parent or carer to take out two disabled children on their own. It’s the best of both worlds as it can be used as a ‘double’ or two singles!

Our unique specialist flexible connectors will join two larger single seated buggies together to make a twin ‘double pushchair’ suitable for older, heavier, taller children who have outgrown standard pushchairs. With our unique buggy to buggy connectors, it is now possible for you to get out of house with both children on your own! The way it works is to join two of these pushchairs together which gives you the option of having two larger single buggies plus a double side-by-side pushchair.

Each Special Tomato EIO is a specialist pushchair with a weight capacity up to 41kg so will be suitable for a child from 2 years old to around 8-10 years old, depending on disability and growth rate. This pushchair is suitable for children with mild to moderate needs and comes with 4 padded supports in the seat and a foot block that can be used for postural support. The pushchair has an adjustable footrest and the seat back reclines. Standard features include padded hip and trunk laterals, a padded headrest and a harness. There’s also a sun canopy, shopping basket and a lightweight easy to fold frame, weighing only 9.9kg each.

The sun canopy is a really good size and can be pulled further forward when not fully reclined, which is useful for those children who like to hide away or are overwhelmed by the sensory input when out and about. We find this is particularly useful for children with Autism, Epilepsy and conditions where they are affected adversely by the sun, daylight or heat. The pushchair also allows for additional postural supports to be used in addition to the standard harness that may help restrain those children that are able to ‘escape’ from the standard pushchair harness and those who have no safety awareness.

Single Special Tomato EIO Key Measurements:
Maximum Seat Weight Capacity: 41kg
Overall Passenger height (with canopy) approx. 135cm
Overall length seat (head to toe): 125cm
Seat Width: 14″ (36 cm)
Seat Depth: 12″ (30.5 cm)
Seat Back Height : 24″ (61 cm)
Seat to Footwell: 13″ (33cm)
Width when two are connected together is 126cm (approx.)
Buggy Weight (each): 9.9kg

We can add Sun Shades for those children who are light sensitive or whose conditions may be triggered or worsened by light and/or sun. These cover the front and sides, although it should be noted the footrest does need to be slightly elevated to fit the shade fully around the foot area and if a child kicks out, it will come off the foot area, leaving the feet exposed.

We developed Specialist Flexi-Connectors for these larger pushchairs as there are so few options for families with two disabled children, and particularly those between the ages of 3 and 8 years old who have outgrown their standard nursery pushchairs. We had the buggies and connectors out on live trials with families who had 1, 2 or 3 disabled children and they tested them over a year – the feedback was very positive, so we put them into production in June 2019. They are really easy to connect or disconnect the two pushchairs and manoeuvrability is good even with an uneven weight in each pushchair. This invention has enabled sole carers of two disabled children to get out and about, which in many cases was extremely difficult and stressful for both parent and children. The connected pushchairs are wider than a standard double as they need to be far enough apart to allow the swivel front wheels to turn.

This combination offers an interim solution that may last for a few years as your children transition from a standard sized pushchair. If they continue to require a pushchair after the age of 8-10 years old (or if younger, they are tall / heavy for their age), then we have larger single pushchairs plus a larger double pushchair that is suitable for children up to approx. 16-18 years old – this also has a unique connecting mechanism we call ‘lock & release’ and also provides two single pushchairs and a ‘locked together’ very sturdy pushchair.

For children who need a little more positioning, the Size 1 and 2 Soft-Touch Liners and Soft-Touch Sitters can be inserted into the Special Tomato EIO pushchair (see Special Needs Seating for these options).
